So...this guy walks into a bar...
|
|
|
|
(This guy was me...and this is a true story!)
As I approached the bar in this popular full-service restaurant, I had not yet climbed into my chair before the bartender asked, "You need something to drink?"
What ever happened to, "Hey there...how are you today? Welcome!" Besides, who walks into a bar and doesn't want something to 'drink'. It's like walking into a hair salon and being asked, "do you need something?" (yea..a burger and fries! duh!)
I was handed a menu and then ordered a beer. She retrieved my beer and while setting it in front of me, exclaimed, "Do you know what you want?" Since I had not yet even opened the menu, I was forced to reply, "No - I've not yet even opened the menu."
I was a bit confused, as I was one of five people sitting at this 22-seat bar. The bartender had more to do outside of the bar than behind it - such as stocking beer, making juices, cutting fruits, filling ice-bins - all the other things we allow our bartenders to do while ignoring guests in the middle of the lunch rush.
With several minutes of passed time, my decision made my menu closed, and my beer empty...she appeared from the kitchen. After watching her walk by a couple times, I flagged her down and requested another beer. She obliged by getting it for me, placed it in front of me and walked away. I, as any of us would do, flagged her down to place my food order. I ordered the Three-Taco Platter.
In a timely manner, my food was served to me. However, I knew at a glance that the rice was not of quality (I have great eyes) and was over-portioned (I've ordered this item several times before). Putting my finger in the beans (because no steam was lifting from them) I knew they were not hot. The tacos looked appealing. I've never understood how a restaurant could be in the middle of their lunch period and have any sort of cold or non-quality food in the kitchen.
I ate one Taco (I never touched the rice and beans. I was afraid of them). I then took my first bite of the second taco and sat back to chew on the over-cooked-dry chicken. (This chewing process takes longer than chewing fresh chicken).
She approached me. Of course I thought she was going to ask how everything was - but instead, asked an interesting question. With most of my meal in front of me, a full beer and a full Coke, she asked, "Do you need a to-go box?"
Her question sparked a really good idea in my mind - hurry up and eat, pay your bill and leave. And that is exactly what I tried to do. However, with my credit card laying on the bar and several minutes of time passed...she found the strength (between filling juice containers that should already be full before the lunch rush starts) to ask me if I wanted another beer. I pointed to my credit card and said, "No, I'm ready to cash out." And I did exactly that.
From an exact situation - we lose so much business and the scary thing is that we don't know how much of this is being told to the world. I put it on my web-site. I know someone will read it.
